When a Siddley-Lockheed CP-450 carrying a group of privileged pleasure-seeking Dynasty members is blown up over Nova Zealand, Senior Investigator Paula Myo of the Serious Crimes Directorate is called in to solve the terrible crime. A group called the Free Merioneth Forces have claimed responsibility but there had to be an individual at the end of that missile launcher and Paula is determined to find out who it was.

The Demon Trap A Short Story from the Manhattan in Reverse Collection (Audible Audio Edition) Peter F Hamilton Steve Hodson Macmillan Digital Audio Books

This short is an ideal taster if you are considering buying Hamilton's "Pandora's Star" and "Judas Unchained", the two novels that establish the 'Commonwealth' in which this story is set. And if you like hard core, galaxy spanning, multi-character, high-tech sci-fi, then you should be considering most of Hamilton's novels!

At 74 (estimated) pages, this short has the length to establish the background of both the characters and the scene, but in typical Hamilton style he doesn't spend a lot of words doing this explicitly, instead weaving various threads together organically to build the picture up.

And that picture is a murder/terrorist mystery that is relentlessly pursued by Paula Myo of the Serious Crimes Directorate. Paula has a leading role in the Commonwealth Saga, and an interesting personal back-story, which this short delves into. As with most of Hamilton's work, subtle questions are raised about genetics, technology and human behavior, but he does not beat us over the head answering them. Not that we get loose ends as such...Hamilton is generally optimistic about the future state of Mankind, having spread us far and wide using the hyper efficient wormholes that Nigel Sheldon and Ozzie Isaac introduced to us with almost comedic effect in "Pandora's Star" and Paula has a particularly relentless nature, so in that regard this is a satisfying read with a definite story arc and thematic closure.

If you've read my other reviews of Hamilton's work you'll know my opinion on the pricing applied to his Kindle editions! Basically, if he wrote sub par stories I'd let sticker shock move me to another author. But if you are considering the Commonwealth Saga (or "Fallen Dragon" which is a standalone Commonwealth novel or the "The Void Trilogy" which is also set in the Commonwealth but about 1,500 years further ahead), then the less than $2 investment in this short is well worth it because by the end you'll likely know whether Hamilton is an author for you or not.

The Demon Trap A Short Story from the Manhattan in Reverse Collection (Audible Audio Edition) Peter F Hamilton Steve Hodson Macmillan Digital Audio Books Reviews

When a pleasure cruiser is shot out out of the sky by missiles, it doesn't take long for the authorities to see the wood for the trees. Politics itself soon becomes the prime suspect in this case of mass murder but with Mr Hamilton's imagination already in hyperspace, the reader has to concentrate on the facts, clues and red herrings if he/she does not want to be left behind in this extraordinary (space) race for the "killer". You will need to read this yourself to learn whodunit but like any other trip into the unknown with the brilliant Peter F Hamilton, the fun is in the journey. Just like life itself.

BFN Greggorio!
